Our most recent farm trip was to the beautiful rolling pastures of King City to visit Catherine Halliday at Silver Square Angus. Catherine raises 100% grass fed and finished Angus beef. On our trip we enjoyed learning about how she raises and cares for her animals.
These fields are ideal for raising grass fed cattle and have it all; great grass (top notch cattle feed), rolling hills (it is important for the cattle to go up and down hills as it helps them digest), available shelter from the hot sun and inclement weather and access to water.
The fields that these cattle graze in are not only beautiful rolling hills in an idyllic environment but they also have premium wild grasses with mixes of timothy grass, clover and more….. Growing wild like this you can be assured that there is zero pesticides or fertilizers here!!
The hours we spent with Catherine walking through the fields to see her animals and learning about how she cares for them was a real treat and time definitely well spent!! As always – we’re already looking forward to our next farm visit….
A few words from Catherine about Silver Square Farm:
Our family operates a medium sized registered Black Angus beef cow/calf operation in King Township, about 20 minutes north of Toronto.
We believe in: quality, integrity, hard work, ethical and humane practices and honesty.
The wellbeing and happiness of our cattle is foremost, ahead of profit and convenience. All the meat we sell comes from cattle that were bred, born and raised on our farms so we can guarantee that the meat is hormone and drug-free, raised in the best-possible conditions.
Our animals are forage developed and grass-fed on pasture through the spring, summer and fall, and fed only good quality hay in the winter. No grains, corn, antibiotics or hormones are used to mature and finish these animals. We give them open fields in which to live, breed and play, clean water, sunshine and time to grow naturally.
Raising and finishing beef naturally takes longer than finishing commercial grain fed animals. Our steers enjoy two summers of pasture and are typically butchered when they are around 24 months old.
